Had it towed to a local shop (not my trusted Indy, he was too far away). They had to remove the intake (fuel injection rail?) to get the bolts out...charged me about $450 for the repair, which included about $20 for the intake gasket, two gallons antifreeze, and various shop supplies. So not sure exactly how much labor, bit it sounds like 4+ hours at about $86/hr.
Oh, and I had to rent a car for a day (shop could not get to it that first day), that was $35. Plus the shop tried to charge me for two intake takers, until I pointed it out to them on the original invoice...so not too happy with the shop, even though they are local to my house and well-known. On the good side they waived the tow charge for any job over $200...
New bolts are nice and shiny, but I doubt they are stainless.
For the record, should I have replaced the bolts before I reinstalled the thermostat cover as a matter of course? Did the bolts break (upon install, not removal, remember) because they are aluminum, or due to heat fatigue? Should I have greased the bolts before refitting? This is causing me to be very wary of any bolts going into the engine.
Since the repair, I have noticed some small drops of coolant at the tailpipe after startup (no evidence of coolant after full warmup). I can't be sure that this is a new problem since the repair, as I have experienced the "check radiator" warning light and had to top off overflow tank in the past...
To rule out head gasket issue I tried a product from Nanotechnologies called "head gasket repair" which necessitated thermostat removal, coolant flush, addition of product with water, 30 minute idle, drain, overnight dry/set with system drained and open to air, then flush and refill with clean coolant. This product did not solve the coolant drops at the tailpipe, but the engine may be performing a little better. Hard to tell. Any thoughts? (my Indy was not concerned about head gasket failure, or the repair the other shop had done-I told him it could be the gasket/intake coolant circuit, he said probably not...). My dad thought another application of "head gasket repair" might help some more. I am concerned because coolant is obviously getting into the combustion chamber somehow, and I have had one 9000CSE die from head gasket failure!
