Common failure for an 18 year old piece. Note that I have had two thermostats die this way on my Audis, which require a much more difficult repair on those cars (timing belt job required).
If you live in the frigid north with our current arctic temperatures, you may want to block half the radiator with a piece of cardboard temporarily and keep an eye on the gauge. Start spraying the thermostat bolts with penetrating oil now, they have been known to get stuck in place. Once the thermostat is fixed, you car will run better and your mileage will improve.
