I needed one two years ago, local dealer couldn't get it because Saab then was in limbo and all parts were locked down. They referred me to a locksmith in a nearby town and he made one, same day, in fact while I waited in his drive, and cheaper than what it would have been from Saab. As I recall the dealership looked up the code and gave it to me to tell him. I wrote it down and saved it. Fit and works perfectly.
The C900 keys were steel and needed to be. I don't believe the 9000 keys ever were and they're robust enough and the cylinder spring is light enough that they don't need to be. Brass is a self-lubing metal and ideal for lockworks and keys.
So an aftermarket replacement or Saab blank will be identical and work as well, other than the Saab logo.
And I think there's enough left of the Saab records and parts network that some parts dealer should be able to find the key code needed, using your VIN. They'll still look up radio codes for free, even for C900s. (Maybe any locksmith has access to the key code database?)
