If there is a problem with the right rear shock tower or if the shock itself is dead then there could be additional clues:
1. Compare the right rear ride height to the left rear ride height by measuring vertically from the center of the wheel to the edge of the fender. There shouldn't be much difference assuming you're parked on a flat surface and the car isn't unevenly loaded.
2. The aim of the driver's side headlight will be higher than the passenger side headlight's aim (US cars).
3. Handling shouldn't feel good on left handed curves, especially if the right side goes over bumps.
4. Going straight over a washboard-type road surface the rear end will feel like it is pulling to the right if the right rear shock isn't working.
I had a dead right rear shock that didn't produce loud noises, just some rumbling over rough roads. The car sat 1/2" lower on the right side than on the left rear side. The handling was ill over rough roads, especially over left handed curves. The driver side headlight aim was high relative to the passenger side headlight aim. All these symptoms went completely away when I replaced the rear shocks.
