People used to do this on double wishbone suspensions where the spring is under less pressure when fully extended. Anytime you try to release spring tension this way use a length of chain or strong ratcheting tie down to secure the spring to frame or something fixed so it won't go flying out and hurt someone. Don't try this on a McPherson strut though, the spring is under a lot of pressure even with the suspension fully extended and there's a chance of it popping out before you release enough tension. Just use a spring compressor, they're cheap or parts stores loan them out too. Lest you think I'm a safety baron, I will say (carefully) using an impact gun makes much quicker work on the compressor even though I think they usually have big warnings saying not to use them. Lubing the threads a little helps too.
