Use a volt meter to perform these tests.
The battery should have a voltage of 12-12.5 volts with the engine off. If not then charge the battery first. If the battery will not charge to 12 volts then it needs to be replaced.
With the engine running you should see a voltage of 13.6 - to 14.7 volts. The lower voltage will be seen if the battery is fully charged, and the higher if it is in need of charging.
If you do not see at least 13.6 volts then the alternator is not functioning correctly and is not charging the battery.
