My 9000 's 2.3 engine is still pretty quiet with about 312,000 miles on it. Occasionally I get a very light valve tap that comes and goes after a cold start, but it goes away quickly. As others have pointed out all of the Saab 16-valve engines use hydraulic tappets and these don't usually cause problems. Some of the early 2.0 16V engines use oil feed tubes with plastic junctions that can get brittle and break, at least on the C900. (That happened on my '86.)
