My main complaint about those middle era cars is the ABS system. I forget which year the mark-4 system came back with diagonal split and a vacuum booster, but the electric-only three channel ABS systems are horrible IMHO. It started with the 88's one-off year, but it continued, all the way through the TCS cars (While non-TCS cars had mk. IV).
As for age on the chassis - the crap that wears out isn't any different than your '96. Rubber is old and needs to get replaced at some point, and obviously the basic maintenance issues.
The early cars have the same fuel system, and indeed engine, as the C900. Then came DI/APC, which replaced the APC and also controls ignition timing, and provides distributor-less ignition. The Trionic fuel system your 1996 has, first came as a one-off year in 1993, and then pretty much everything changed in 1994.
There are some issues with those 1991-1993 2.3's having improperly hardened timing hardware, but those failures generally showed up by 100K, so any of them you run into should have long been done.
