Okay, I checked things out. The original DI is in fact a genuine Saab part. I tried my spare, also genuine, to no avail. Pulled the valve cover, rotated the engine twice through TDC, and everything is still lined up.
It sounds like there's no mechanical distinction between TDC at cylinder 1 or cylinder 4, so my thought of being timed to cylinder 4 is invalid; if I turned the engine until the cam marks were at 180 degrees, then pulled them and realigned to the TDC mark, the DI wouldn't know the difference as it reevaluates the compression stroke on every start up. Correct?
My other thought was that I was sloppy with the dielectric grease and got some on the plugs, so I cleaned everything up and swabbed the DI springs. But that wasn't the case either.
Plugs 2 and 3 are wet. Clearly those didn't try to fire. Plug 4 is dry. Plug 1 is considerably less wet, but still has some fuel residue around the electrode.
Compression is still 185+ across all cylinders.
