I second Rays advice - I had the O-Ring get brittle and crack on me, and I went through a quart and a half of oil in 75 miles. Very simple fix. The likelihood that the timing cover itself is leaking a 'significant' amount is quite small. On the off chance that it is leaking, yes, it is a significant amount of work to replace - I did mine when I did a head gasket and had the whole thing torn apart anyway..
