Bad A/C day Posted by sam96CS [Email] (#852) [Profile/Gallery] (more from sam96CS) on Sat, 11 Jul 2015 16:53:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I was expecting a relatively easy evacuate/recharge job today. The system's R134a had oozed out due to 7 years of no maintenance. It held a vacuum all night, so I knew it was tight. I evacuated the system for about 3 hours to remove moisture. Then added 26 ounces of R134a and 1-1/4 ounce of PAG 46 oil. Got air about 40° colder at the center vent than the ambient temp. The high side pressure was 305, much too high for a 90°F ambient temp. Something isn't right. I decided to go for a haircut to see if the system would settle down. I had no A/C for the return trip. Opened the hood and found a leak in the compressor-to-condenser hose at the condenser crimp big enough to hear. Repair guaranteed to be expensive, and then I still have to find and fix the cause of the excessive pressure.
I paid the price of admission to the International Brotherhood of Refrigeration Mystics (gauge set, vacuum pump, hours of learning curve, etc.) but had such a bad DIY experience complete with a personal contribution to global warming. So it goes with a/c system DIY.
