Have you actually tried this? Just because the voltage of a PN junction produces a predictable voltage per unit temperature (just taking your word for it here), does not imply you can just substitute that into a previously designed circuit. Having worked in the electronics industry for a long time, I don't think I've ever seen a simple diode used as a temperature measuring device; there's probably a good reason for this. My best guess is that this temperature voltage relationship you mention is either not as straightforward or not as accurate as you imply. More to the point, having worked with the sensor in question I can tell you with certainty that it's a resistance based sensor, not a diode. Substituting a diode is not going to work, unless you are suggesting he backwards engineer the entire circuit, then design and build an adapter circuit for the diode in order to produce the output the EDU is expecting. At that point, $85 starts to look like a pretty good bargain.
