Cruise control update + lost bellcrank spring Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Wed, 9 Sep 2015 08:26:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This is a followup to the problem I was having with the cruise control on my 1995 CSE. At first it appeared that the switch on the turn signal stalk was the problem. (The fact that the button on the end tended to jam and had to be fiddled with to get it to work made this easy to believe.)
So I replaced the stalk assembly and at first it appeared to be OK, but it quickly started malfunctioning again. Taking closer note of what was going on, the cruise control would work for about 15-20 minutes then cut out, usually with the dash indicator going out. Then it would not work again until the car was parked to cool off for a while, after which the cruise would once again work for the same amount of time. This was repeatable, it happened every time.
I figured that what might be happening is some electronic component in the module heating up and failing, so a used replacement module was installed. (I hate just throwing parts at a problem but could not find any real troubleshooting info.) This appears to have finally fixed the problem. I took the car out for an hour-long drive yesterday in 95-degree temperature and it didn't skip a beat.
However - when installing the replacement module I wound up removing the cruise control throttle bellcrank along with its small concentric spring in order to unhook the cable. (Once off I saw this wasn't really necessary, but could not see how to do it with the part installed on the throttle shaft.)
Problem is I fumbled and lost the spring. (Like most small parts and tools that one drops under the hood it vanished without a trace.) I put everything back together and it seems to work OK. The cruise control appears to work perfectly despite the missing bellcrank spring.
I'll try to find a replacement spring but am wondering what effect removing it might have. I'm sure Saab put it there for a reason. There are other throttle return springs so I don't think there's any danger of a runaway condition. Is there any reason use of the cruise control should be avoided while that spring is missing?
