I had this problem on a previous 9K. Was several years back, so I don't recall it very well.

Try pushing down on the lid when using the key to unlock. As I recall, the latch was sticking and by pushing down it must have relieved some pressure and it opened OK. Then I opened up the latch mechanism and cleaned and lubed it.

Also try the opposite--lifting while turning the key. Less likely to work, but worth a shot.

As I recall, the little motor is pulling on a stiff wire that moves the hook on the latch. That wire can become disconnected, but if the car has been sitting it's maybe just stiff and needs some love.
