As Dave said, "Any suspension you choose will cost 'good' money. But swapping from suspension to suspension while you're "on a budget" is the most expensive thing you can do."
Pretty much true, and the spend is hard to justify on a car you're gonna get rid of. But if you spend $500 or so on new shocks/struts you probably won't get it back in the sale price.
It's different if you plan on keeping the car. When I did the Sport Chassis Kit (Aero shocks, struts, springs) and SAS bars on my '96 at 150K a customer at my indy said it was crazy to do that on a 12-year-old car.
"Not if you're keeping the car," said my indy. "This customer is doing that and he'll never have to think about his suspension again." And except for doing poly front control arm bushings three years later, I haven't.
Now at 225K, the suspension is still a bit hard in the winter (NH roads kinda suck!) until the shocks are fully warmed up, but it's worth every penny.
