Zeke! Welcome back! I would approach this problem first by making some measurements, preferably with an o'scope to observe the waveform. In short, any irregular waveform would point to a failed diode inside the alternator. A normal ripple waveform that's low could mean something simple as poor contact in one of the (dirty/loose) terminals or corroded cable(s). Whatever the case, a good visual inspection of the terminals/cables goes a long way. It's been my own experience (once) to remove the alternator from the bottom...similar to the procedure posted by JerseySaab.
