Yup - turbocharger leaking oil internally. Replaced with a low(er) mileage T25 I had picked up on eBay a while back, negligible shaft play, and it's running properly again, maybe even pushing a little higher on the dash gage.

Nice to be able to go through the drive-thru and not fog everybody out.
