Well, most of a week later, and with a little over 500 miles driven, it appears that the operation was a success. Still having a little stumbling in the morning when cold, but that may be due more to the 3 to 7 degree temperature than the head gasket change. Car runs also quieter now that there are 7 intact exhaust manifold bolts instead of 4. Now to get back to the 9-5......
