I have a 9000 Aero and have searched high and low for something that can match it. It's easy to find a newer car that is better in one or a couple of areas, but I still haven't found anything that has the same combination of performance, space/practicality, comfort and driving pleasure.
I've found a couple of cars that come close, but still haven't decided which will replace my Aero when the time comes:
I used to hate Volvos and didn't like the V70 etc, but the last generation of Volvos are much better. The V90 is pretty nice, especially the T8. Of course there are also the germans - A BMW M550D or 540i wagon are also nice cars - but expensive...
I have a 9000 Aero, a 9-3 TTID wagon (200 Hp twin turbo diesel - great engine and excellent car for commuting) and my wife drives a 2018 Volvo V40 T3. At the moment my plan is to keep the Aero and just have it as my "fun" car and do a complete restoration including respray etc, but with pure performance and around 400hp as the goal since it's no longer my daily driver. It'll still be a lot cheaper than the other cars mentioned above, and it'll be a lot faster since it's so much lighter. Of course some people might say it'd make more sense to have a "real sports car" as a fun car. But then it wouldn't be a Saab ;)
