Silver A/C Relay under the hood replacement Posted by skibumm100 [Email] (#3255) [Profile/Gallery] (more from skibumm100) on Fri, 13 Jul 2018 09:21:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The wife's 97 9000 CSE was having trouble with intermittent A/C operation. I checked the charge and it was OK. It blew cold when it worked. It turned out to be a bad Bosch DPST relay. I checked my spare parts and could not locate one. I know I have at least two spares kicking around. I figured I could use just about any 5-pin relay.....no dice. They are almost exclusively SPDT, not DPST. I figured I'd have to make a harness and use two relays with the coils operating simultaneously, one to run the compressor and one to run the A/C cooling fan behind the grille. After searching the bins and hangers at AutoZone and not finding something that would work, the counter guy said they had a kit that might work. We went over to the area where the auxiliary lighting is looking for 4-pin plugs to fab the harness and there it was, a 5-pin DPST relay used for fog light kits. Plugged right in and works as it should. I tried cleaning the contacts on my original and I couldn't get the compressor clutch to operate reliably. We'll see how long it lasts but it was less than $10.
