The "thing" that signals the starter to run is a somewhat thin yellow wire that connects to one of the terminals of the solenoid on the starter motor. The yellow wire should have about +12V when the ignition switch is turned to the "start" position - you can verify this with a voltmeter or a light bulb. If it's not getting +12V, the factory alarm/immobilizer system may be preventing this; there is a method of bypassing this module by wiring around it, can probably find directions in the archives here by using the Search function.
