96CSE turbo 5spd, 214k miles.

Downshifted to 2nd and stepped on the gas, moved into the left lane to pass a line of slow cars at a freshly green light. Everything went well for a moment, big stupid grin as boost built, felt a little torque steer, then a sudden very heavy drag pulled me left. Narrowly avoided a head-on collision, felt like either a blowout or I was losing a wheel, I could hear the front left tire repeatedly scraping the fender liner. Steering all over the place, barely keeping things straight as I pulled into the breakdown lane. Fought till a dead stop.

For sure I have a flat, or my wheel is barely attached, but no. Inflated all around. Front wheels both pointing the same direction, standing straight up. Car is sitting level. Pulled off the center caps and retorqued the bolts, but nothing was loose. Axle bolts felt tight. Discovered a missing a wheel weight on the front left, but nothing else. Proceeding with caution, put the car back in 1st and crept along in the breakdown lane. No problems. Shift into 2nd. Shift into 3rd. Now I'm doing 40 and everything is gravy. Get back on the road before I puncture a tire for real.

Drove a mile, pulled into dirt lot. Back into 1st, windows down to listen as I jerked the wheel around. Nothing out of the ordinary, no funny sounds. Jacked up the front thinking I'd find *something* out of place, but nothing. No broken control arms or tie rods or ball joints. Drove in figure 8s over some bumps, hoping I find something before I head into the mountains and find myself in a ditch. Still nothing. Can't keep this up, better get home.

Drove cautiously and uneventfully up the canyon road and parked in my muddy driveway.

What the hell happened???
