Engine rattle noise - discovered
Posted by Weston [Email] (more from Weston) on Fri, 26 Jul 2019 07:22:05
The car is 1997 9000 cse auto, 142k.
After replacing badly deteriorated head gasket, likely original, had a disconcerting rattling noise somewhat lower in engine area.
My initial thought was timing chain stretch? Bad/missing spring in tensioner?
But the timing chain had seemed ok on the cam sprockets, and tensioner extension was somewhat greater than optimal at 12 mm. I left it alone tho.
The rubber upper chain guide under cam cover I had replaced with new.
Turbo?! There was a rattling noise when using large screwdriver as a stethoscope.
There was a decent amount of shaft play, in both radial and axial planes. A putf of smoke at first morning startup. But the compressor wheel fins looked good/undamaged.
I opted to order a reman from Eriksson Industries in CT.
Upon removing turbo, found the Wastegate disc unattached from arm!!! Rivet/pin was long gone. Disc just bouncing around like a quarter in a glass jar.!!!
