Four blinks is a "coolant temperature sensor" fault. Did the engine overheat? If the sensor really is bad that might not have shown up on the temperature gauge. Even if it's working that gauge is buffered by the computer and works more like an idiot light than a true indicator of engine temperature.
What I would probably do is check for cooling system leaks either with a pressure tester or UV dye kit (or both), and check the coolant with one of those kits that tests for head gasket leaks.
