Also consider clutch shims

It's been quite awhile, so I'm not sure if there's a model year after which this no longer applies. There's a common issue in which the AC compressor clutch air gap grows too large over time, interfering with its operation. Classic symptom is that the compressor fails to engage once the engine has warmed up. Expansion of the parts with added heat makes the gap too large.
The fix in that circumstance is to remove one of the shims from the clutch. Fixes it right up. Search the archives for the procedure.
Of course, I've had the experience of the AC relay working loose, and like you, reseating it fixed the issue. Hopefully that's all it was in your case!
