Piston ring installation question...

So I rebuilt this motor myself 30,000 miles ago. But I've ordered a new set of piston rings and they're a little different. They're from Federal-Mogul. And my question is about the top ring. Now the oil ring has like a recessed part on the ring that faces down that is towards the outside of the Ring.on the top ring there's a recessed part, but it's on the inside half of the ring and I just don't know if that faces up or if that recessed part faces down.the old set of rings didn't have a recessed part on the compression ring at all. Hopefully I explained that correctly.
