Solution: strut bellows on a 9000? By carefully disassembling the strut, then pulling the plastic cap off of the top of the black part of the strut (internal to the bellows), the bellows did not tear and I was able to reuse the existing parts. There is a procedure in the Haynes manual showing how this is done - previous try by a general tire/shock place didn't do this.
Note that I had planned to buy SKF strut bearings from eEuroparts, ordered them online, but despite the fact that it showed "in stock" they were not available. They told me that the current crop of "Genuine SAAB" strut bearings were the same a ProParts Sweden (typically junk parts), so I passed on that alternative. Wound up getting Moog strut bearings elsewhere (the most expensive alternative) and have to report that they are pretty substandard as well - loose bearings even though they are new parts.
