I'll bet many of you fellow long time 9000 owners have re-flowed the solder on relays. My top two will be the central locking module [many hundreds of posts] and the red headlight six pin relay near the battery [well, at least since idk 1991? when the relays were shuffled around].
Anyway. I've been living with an intermittent cabin fan ... not the clunky, squeaking, jerking 'blower motor brushes are failing' fail, but a sometimes power interrupt where I'm driving for an hour and i notice 'hey, is that fan running on low? or not even running?' [and, before you ask, when you're driving on the Interstate the airflow can be reasonable just going on the normal, well-designed suction pulling air through via the aft hatch pillar vents. If you doubt, try turning the ACC 'off' at 75 mph. You'll feel a very nice steady flow from the dash vents even with all the windows and sunroof closed. Btw, that's a partial hack to making the cabin fan motor last longer in spring and fall]*
I tried cycling the ACC on/off, adjusting the fan speed manually, tapping the dash [hey, sometimes it works on the "'dead' fuel gauge/ACC AC compressor" glitch from the back of the EDU/bad ground], tapping the right front side of the ACC panel, pressing very lightly on the right side of the ACC panel near the 'heat/defrost' position ... sometimes these would work, sometimes no help. Knock on plastic and swedish steel, I've never ever had the fan controller resistor fail or the regulator [https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/10109/Blower-Motor-Regulator-4632477A/]. I've had many 9000's and done the fan motor at least six times, but never the regulator.
So, having an extra afternoon available today and a heated garage space [usually this excellent 97 9k CSE lives outside all the time, either in the driveway here in SE Wisconsin or in a parking lot at ORD ... or sometimes on long road trips to Minneapolis or La Crosse], I decided to pull the ACC module apart** and re-flow solder.
I've taken these apart before, including this one a couple of years ago, but only to replace the tiny light bulbs that backlight the switches. Well, I re-flowed all the many tiny connectors on both ends of the ribbon between the board and the front panel, as well as the numerous connectors on the very back edge of the board where the cable bundle plugs into the rest of the car's myriad inputs and outputs.
It's working great. Perfect so far. The acid test will be on the next trip to ORD, maybe in a couple of days, or a drive to a small town north of Madison on Sunday to watch the Super Bowl with my 96 year old dad. I'll post an update only if this is a fail. I'm hoping this is yet another good option for us, the few 9000 hardcore lifers.
*even better in nice spring weather: drop the right rear window an inch, and pop the sunroof tilt up. Slide the sunshade back a couple of inches before you tilt. A very nice swirl of air moves through, especially at 45 - 65 mph, and it's not too loud. Cools the back seat nicely, too.
**gently pry the module out. Ease the large connector off the back via the left side squeeze tab. Undo the six screws holding the gray rear section to the black front area. Ease the several clips with a small screwdriver, then undo the two small screws [on the rear corners of the gray plastic, perpendicular to the module] holding the back section of the board in place. Be gentle with the ribbon. Replace the tiny light bulbs while you're inside and 'see' all the back-lit switches again. Re-flow all the above referenced connections. Reassemble and test before you snap it in. Oh, while the ACC is out, letting the solder iron heat up, pull the cabin interior air sensor and clean out the dust and crud - just to the left of the ACC module. Undo the little cover from the front, then ease out the module towards the inside of the dash. Clean the grill, the resistor, and the little vanes on the fan. Quiet and more effective sensing the interior temp.
