So far there is a lot of confusing info here about clutch and flywheel.
Flywheel surfacing and clutch function : Machining the friction surface to
renew a clean and true surface will lighten the flywheel slightly. As long as the relationship
of the friction surface and the mounting surface for the pressure plate remain the same the clutch action and throw of the pedal will not change. The hydraulic slave cylinder is auto-adjusting and the pedal throw and movement of the diaphragm spring of the pressure plate will not change.
Pedal effort and engagement point : As the clutch disc wears and gets thinner the 'clamping position' of the spring in the pressure plate changes and can change pedal effort to disengage the clutch. In the 900 this often results in pedal effort increasing as the disc reaches 'worn out' status.
Flywheel lightening : Some lightening does increase responsiveness of the engine, but also increases sensitivity to stalling from a start. For a street driven car you want to be careful to not over lighten or you will need to get really good at synchronizing accelerator and clutch to get smooth starts. Lightened flywheel also increases the rate the engine slows as you lift off throttle for shifts. A light flywheel is great for fast power shifting, but can mess up smooth easy shifting. Flywheels are lightened by removing material without compromising the friction surface and the structure holding the ring gear. The mass of metal incorporating the friction surface is also to some degree a heat sink for friction heat from clutch action.
