Hmmm I had to replace the Hatch on My '97 a few years back Faced same issue.
Frankly tho I Can't remember exactly How I did it.
But there was absolutely NO dicking about with the Cars interior.
Only hatch disassembly.. and having to Crazy glue the Rubber grommets back to their holes in the car body. To be Sure the refit was a tight permanent, no leak fix.
As it was ~ 10 yrs ago and it's still watertight ... I think that worked.
