Looks like the problem may have been a clogged fuel filter. It's kind embarrassing since I generally do keep up with maintenance, but being under the car it's a real nasty job without a lift, laying on my back with the car on jack stands. So I didn't get to this one in time. (One thing I miss about my old 8-valve C900s is the fuel filter is conveniently located under the hood and very easy to change.)

I'll know for sure when I take the car for a test drive but it's no longer stumbling and stalling when going into closed loop mode and the engine revs up and settles back to idle smoothly.
