Just an update on my speaker quest: after some trial and error I settled on a set of NVX 4 inch coaxials in the front, and 6X9 components in the back. Total damage to my wallet was about $155 (I got decent deals from Amazon and Sonic Electronix that seems to be the store front for NVX). I’ve compared them with a couple of options from Rockford Fosgate, Alpine and a JL Audio C1 (my budget did not extend much further into the JL Audio territory). I did find the JL Audio somewhat nicer sounding, especially in the back, but overall I was pleasantly surprised by what NVX speakers could do, and since there are other problems with my audio to be sorted out, I decided to stop there. The NVX 4 inchers sported massive magnets and and were just fitting into the factory mounts on the dash. With the Alpines and the Rockford Fosgates there wasn’t much of a competition (and the RF 4-inch Punch midranges did not fit into factory mounting holes). In the rear I had to do some cutting to accommodate the NVX tweeters, but overall it wasn’t so bad (picture shows the NVX components mounted to factory panels).
Now my next problem is that the factory radio/equalizer/amplifier combo only sounds passable with highs set to minimum, and lows to maximum: the “flat” settings produce harsh highs and almost absent lows. I’d rather keep the factory system if I can, of course with things being 30 years old now, fixes may not be so simple. I’ll try to see if I can bypass the equalizer, but my gut the problem may be with the head unit... Any input would be appreciated
