They're not hard to change out (Sanden). Mine were definitely gone: one was super flat and the other had a hairline crack that was no doubt leaking. One side of the valve was wet with oil which could not be seen unless it was removed. Anyway, reassembly was just as easy. BTW, I (inadvertedly) adjusted the expansion valve CCW a couple of turns thinking it was some sort of cap. Now my AC blows colder than ever!
