I've siphoned it from the top but I think using the fuel pump is easier. I'm surprised there would be two gallons in the tank once the fuel pump stops pumping. The canister sits in the sump and the eductor pulls from the tank sump and fills the canister. I would've thought the tank would be pretty close to dry by the time you lose prime on the pump. I have never tested that and then dumped the tank to measure it, though. I know that if you run them out of gas, you're pretty much done.
