Well it happened. My strap broke.
Currently, they're available in 2025 from proparts.
the bolt was totally rusted - i opted to drill from the top. the bolt on the floor pan in front of the spare wheel well. There are 2 foam inserts, the right one is the cover for this. Take out the foam, the spot to drill is the left circle. Use a punch, use a step drill, get to work.
Drilled it out in about 5 minutes and the remnants of the bottom fell out
Used a new M8 bolt and put it in. Went underneath and put the new strap in from the side, put the strap into the thing and wiggle it around. Then I used a small jack to lift the fuel tank up a few inches.
I pushed the strap thru the new bolt and threaded it with a new nut
Since I did not have a helper i just used a 13mm cresecent and jammed it in on the top against the metal rail. it held fine.
I tightened the nut down under the car
It did not go all the way. it appears to have about 1/4 - 1/2 inch gap. maybe the new straps are shorter, or maybe it just needs to flex a little bit. I will double check in a few weeks. others have reported this issue with the new straps as well.
All in took about 1 hour between drinking coffee and taking all the crap out of the trunk.
now my tank is not hanging on a hope and a prayer.
