Possibly your governor seals are failing. The usual symptom is erratic automatic shifting but manual shifting works OK. I had this happen years ago on my '97 9000. Replacing the seals was not too difficult, an afternoon's wrenching. However at that time Eriksson Industries was still providing parts for these transmissions. I don't think that's the case any more. (They are square-shouldered rubber seals, not o-rings.)

Although it was apparently popular in Europe the ZF 4HP18 transmission is almost unknown in the U.S., only having been used in the Saab 9000 and a few other even lower-volume cars.
