Several months ago I had previously asked about a P0444 code which concerns the evap purge valve and its circuitry. Although the valve could be audibly activated via Tech2 the code would still come back at random, first as a pending code then later turning on the check engine light. I had some apparent success cleaning the connector just behind the right-hand front turn signal but that didn't completely solve the problem, it would just take a little longer for the code to return.

Since the car had to go through inspection last month I finally dug further in and cleaned the electrical connection directly on the purge valve itself - just barely reachable from above after taking out the turn signal assembly. (What the heck were the designers smoking when they decided where to put the evap canister?)

After doing that I cleared the code and was able to get through the drive cycle without it returning and passed inspection. (The only issue was the inspector gaping at this disreputable-looking, rusty, high-mileage beater with an expression that practically screamed "You have GOT to be kidding!")

It's now been about a month and the P0444 code has not returned, not even as a pending code which it previously would do pretty quickly. However the car can now only be fueled slowly, in most cases requiring manual control of the gas pump nozzle. This is a bit of a problem here in NJ where the commandment "Thou shalt not pump thine own gasoline" is the law of the land. Regardless, I still wind up nursing the nozzle so the attendant can take care of other customers.

Of course it could be a coincidence that this started immediately after fixing the connection to the purge valve, but maybe not. I'm thinking there's some issue with the tank venting that may be tied to the evap system.

So after this long, sad story the question before I start tearing into the fuel tank hoses is: Has anyone here experienced this kind of problem and if so what was the solution?
