Timing chain tensioner check

I am investigating engine vibration source. Today I attempted to check the timing chain tensioner according to the writeups I found on this site. I had a problem, however. After removing the upper engine mount I fitted the 12mm socket through the aperture on the alternator fixing bracket and removed the smaller bolt. I also removed the spring and the plastic part. Next I attempted to move the main part but couldn't fit the 27mm socket through the aperture.
All I could do is measure the depth with a mauser. I got a distance of 40 mm from the top of the main part to the bottom of the where the plastic part sits. I tried to look at the cross section on the haynes manual but it wasn't clear.
