Finding timing marks?

I am having a devil of a time finding the timing marks on my 89 9000 turbo. The Haynes manuals makes passing mention of it being under the tranny access cover or on the front pulley. I pulled the access cover and checked the crank pulley and I am simply not finding any timing marks to align too. Can someone point me in the right direction. I know this is something I am just missing and it is driving me nuts.
