Wow, that's kind of a strange symptom. I thought I was familiar with all possible valve train noises by now :) It sounds like maybe one of the lifters isn't pumping up correctly. If you've ever pulled the oil pump, let the engine sit a long time, or any other situation that lets the lifters pump down, then you are familiar with the loud clattering that results upon start up and can continue for a few minutes. Of course the big question would be why doesn't it do this when it's completely cold, and I have no idea why.

Since pulling the valve cover is fairly easy, it might be worth checking and the plastic nipples at the oil feeding tubes as you mentioned. I find it best to pull the tubes off as asemblies and blow through the individual nipples to make sure everything is lined up and not clogged. When I did mine I broke a couple of the nipples, so if you try this it might be worth having a couple extras around. The two corner ones seem to be most vulnerable. I don't know if there's a way to check lifters with the VC off except maybe trying to manually press down on them and seeing if one feels collapsed, but your situation might be particularly challenging since a lifter obviously isn't collapsed at start up.

Wish I could be more helpful, but I thought I'd throw out a couple of ideas anyway. Let us know what it turns out to be!
