The speedo on the '88 is electronic - no cable. I've had experience with this on the automatic tranny - it might be similar on the manual tranny (you didn't specify).
On the autotranny, there is a sensor at the back (firewall) side of the transmission. There is an electrical cable that runs down to it. Look for a cylinder about 3/4 inch in diameter, about 2" long, sticking vertically into the transmission case. There is a little pin in the transmission that bobs up and down as the final drive spins. The cylinder (sensor) has a hole in it that the pins bobs in, producing an electrical signal for the speedo and other things (cruise control). The sensor is a Press In into the transmission. As it works its way out over time, the signal gets flakey. Make sure the sensor is pressed in firmly. That will probably fix your dancing speedo.
There are anti-rattle springs for the brakes. You could always go out and buy a new set of pads - some brands come with new springs. You'll need the pads sometime, so you could install the springs now. Frankly, for the effor of jacking up the car and removing the wheel, I'd replace the pads. Are you sure the springs are missing? You should be able to see them through the wheel.
