Heater Core Install

Well, it's that time of the year where I need to put in a new heater core. Last weekend I flushed my coolant, replaced thermostat, added fresh coolant and added about a half-bottle of Bars Leaks heavy duty (pellets) and about a half bottle of regular B.L. I still smell coolant, not good. I guess the hole is bigger than B.L. will patch.
First, is there anything else I can do without having to replace the heater core? (add anything else I suppose?)
Second,I would like to know what kind of job (how long it will take me) to replace a heater core. I'm not a great mechanic, but I did do my coolant flush and replaced the thermostat in two hours. Can the average joe like myself do a job like this? I looked behind the false firewall and it looks pretty crammed. Looks like a full weekend.....
Also, I would appreciate any sources for well priced heater cores and whatever else I would need. Thanks in advance.
