This is a common problem with the 88 thru 90. I fixed mine about a year ago (and have passed this on to many other Saab users). The fix is on the Townsend site under electrical/ignition. It involves about $15 and at best 45 minutes to fix. Believe it or not you add a ford solenoid to the starter circuit - the solenoid is less than $10. I cannot tell you how easy it is, just do it. Until you do, however, here's a trick. Open the hood. Where the driver's side hood hinges up is a rectangular plastic plate, under the plate are electrical input jacks for use by mechanics. If the car won't start, remove the plate, turn the key all the way to the on position, stick one end of a 2 foot wire in the jack THAT IS AT THE 7 O'CLOCK POSITION AS YOU ARE FACING THE CAR FROm THE DRIVER'S SIDE. touch the other end of the wire to the positive battery terminal. the car will crank and start. remove the wire and take off. My email address is included if you need more info.
