I don't mean to have given the wrong impression on my old post. These tires are louder than my previous two sets, and no doubt louder than the current crop of ultra-high performance tires. For being an eight or so year old design though, I think they're great. While I may have misgivings about the noise levels, I have nothing but praise for both the wet and dry performance.
Personally, I am still a little skeptical about all these new tires with the wave or whatever you call it fancy tread designs, such as the Pirelli P6000 series, Bridgestone/Firestone with their RE730 and SZ50, along with the rest. I had a set of P6000SV, and found them just adequate in the rain, and significantly inferior to the P4000ST, a tire with a conventional tread pattern several years older. Conventional meaning it has the standard three or four circumferential wide channels in the tread, as opposed to the single channel down the center of the tire as many of the new ones (I think the SZ50 has none?) I'm not knocking all the new tires, just pointing out that at least in the case of Pirelli, newer tread design is not always better. After all, the three 9000T at Talladega in 1986 were shod with Pirelli P600, about as conventional a high performance tire as you can get, and they drove full-out (130 mph +) in downpours with nary an incident. Of course there is considerable banking on the Superspeedway, so no sharp turns even at that speed, but even so I think it's impressive..
