Driving with a failed DI Posted by TonyJ [Email] (#407) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TonyJ) on Thu, 19 Oct 2000 21:10:22 In Reply to: Re: DI cartrige, Erik, Thu, 19 Oct 2000 17:06:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Our 94 Aero's DI failed recently at only 65K, but fortunately 3 days before the major component warranty expired, so we got a new one for only the $150 deductible. It was a sudden and hard (not intermittent) failure that happened only 1/4 mile from home, evident by a definite miss at any speed including idle; like someone pulled off a plug wire. I immediately felt each injector and all four seemed to be clicking; then I pulled the DI, which looked OK, then the plugs (due to be changed anyhow), which also looked OK. I plugged the plugs into the DI, hooked up a ground wire to them, and had my wife crank the engine, wherupon it became immediately evident that the #2 coil was totally out. The service manager said it was OK to drive on 3 cylinders ~7 miles to the dealer, but I decided to unplug the #2 injector to avoid dumping raw gas into the exhaust and having unburned fuel wash oil off the cylinder walls. After the mechanic replaced the DI, he agreed that disabling the injector of the sparkless cylinder was an excellent idea; they have seen cases where the unburned fuel caued the Cat to melt down. By the way, our 93 turbo has 146K on the original DI, but I now carry a spare.
