The timing chain tensioner was at its limit so I figured I needed a new chain. Opened up the timing cover and ... oops, the intake balance shaft was 5 degrees out of pace, all teeth ground. Exhaust shaft was 90 degrees out of pace. The tensioner was at its limit.
I threw in the new timing chain and cam shaft sprocket, guides were ok. Replaced the intake balance shaft sprocket, balance shaft chain and both guides. Other sprockets were ok.
Couple of things I figured could be helpful:
-Opening/closing the harmonic balancer bolt is very easy with a pressure air operated bolt machine.
-Use the old balance shaft chain in combination with plumbers' pliers to remove and install balance shaft sprocket
-After installing timing cover I poured 1 litre engine oil on the chains & sprockets to avoid dry running for the first half minute.
-Tighten the valve cover in the same manner as the cylinder head, in spiral pattern and do it in several steps. I went around 5 times.
-The description in the haynes manual doesn't tell you to remove lower bolts from A/C compressor bracket but it's necessary
-I spent 16 hours on the job !
-To avoid running to the same situation I will change the oli every 10000 km with original Saab filter and fill in 5 litres instead of 4.5 as the manual says.
