Well, it looks as if I'm going to find out more about the new Saab dealer in Brooklyn and their service department...a bit more quickly than I'd anticipated. I'd made an appointment for this coming week to have the SRS recall work done on my '92 9000T.
So...Saturday afternoon my girlfriend and I went out to run a few errands. I sat in the car, idling, while she ran into a store. The idle just went bye-bye, and the TCS light came on. Now, I'm no stranger to the limp-home mode. I had the safety valve and check valve and various bits of vacuum plumbing replaced back in '97 while the car was still under the extended warranty. I won't be so lucky this time, as I have 98K on the dial. I'm just hoping I won't be compelled to fork over the $$$ for a new TCS brain. I'd far rather deal with paying to have the plumbing repaired.
With any luck I'll get a new heater core out of the experience.
Couple of quick notes about this dealer: they're known as a Honda/Volvo franchise, and have recently added Saab, Kia and Suzuki. Apparently they have yet to hire any Saab service writers, because I knew more about my car than the service writer I dealt with. Fortunately I did get to spend a few minutes explaining the problem to the service tech, who seemed pretty sharp.
The good thing is that the service department has seriously extended hours. They're open weeknights until after midnight (!!!), and until 3 Saturday afternoon. I was a bit irritated that they were unable to set up a loaner for me; the service writer told me that part of the problem stemmed from the fact that they're a new Saab franchise and would have had to work through the Volvo dealership that's under the same management. They told me it would take two weeks at minimum to arrange something. How does that help the owner who has to bring the car in on an emergency basis? The other thing I was told was that they only provide loaners for owners whose cars are still under warranty. What a missed opportunity...what better time can you think of to familiarize owners of older Saabs who might be contemplating acquiring a new one with more recent models?
