two other possibilities which occur simultaneously:
1. the master cylinder clevis pin holes wear egg-shaped. the first part of your travel is used taking up the slack in the linkage. i have drilled the holes oversized and used a bigger pin. also can drill the clevis holes oversize, use hardware store bronze bushings with a standard size pin.
2. the master cylinder piston clogs up with crud. take it apart, clean the whole thing, with special attention to the holes in the piston head itself. blow air through the passages in the cylinder body. you will be amazed at how much crud there is inside it. a new cylinder will crud up again after a couple of years. take the wear out of the linkage as in (1) before you reassemble it.
