velocity and speed properly.
Velocity is a vector, that means it has both magnitude and direction.
Speed is a scalar, it only has magnitude no direction.
So if I say I am travelling at 100mph with specifying a direction, then no one knows which direction I'm going. However, if I say I'm driving at 100mph North, that's my vector relative to some reference point.
Many people use velocity and speed interchangably (spell police please correct) and strictly speaking, they are not the same. If you specify a speed plus a direction (relative to a reference frame moving or otherwise), then you have velocity. You cannot add velocity and speed because they are of unlike type, but you can add two vectors (using vector addition NOT scalar addition).
Since the experiment is done here on earth, so I would use earth as my reference for the vector. Assume the plane is moving at 1200mph heading say north (or whatever) ground speed, i.e. relative to a fixed reference on earth. If you are moving inside the plane towards the cockpit (in the direction the plane is travelling) at a speed of 0.1 mph.
Then yes, as jj said, you are only doing 0.1 mph relative to your seat inside the plane but is doing 1200.1 mph relative to the ground.
Michael Smith is also correct, relativistic effect takes place only when you are close to the speed of light. If you have an extremely accurate clock, such as an atomic clock, you can in fact detect relativistic effects from orbiting satelites.
But what is this going to do with Saab 9000 ???
