While I can't really say whether the inner bearing is the problem, since I'm no mechanic. I can tell you basically how to check it out and get to it -- it doesn't take all that long to open up. This is how I removed the PASSENGER side axel, but it should be just about the same for the DRIVER side. Good luck!


To get at it, you need to first get the axle nut off with a big wrench (make sure to replace any cotter pins that you remove when putting it back together -- if there is one). It can be really hard to get this nut off, but a long pipe extension and good strong breaker bar help greatly!

Next, loosen the lug nuts and jack up the car. Remove the wheel, and remove the three bolts holding the hub assy to the lower support arm. Loosen the circle fasteners on the inner boot so that it can come off, and swing the entire hub assembly outwards and away from the car.

With a little twisting and pulling, you should be able to free the outer portion of the axel from the hub and then the whole axel will just pull right out from the inner cup joint.

You should be able to clean up the joint, inspect the roller bearings and feel for grooves in the cup itself. If it's bad, you will need to remove the cup and replace it. Probably the bearings will show signs of wear if the cup is grooved badly, so you should get a pretty clear indication either way.

I hope I remembered everything, as I wrote this from memory. If I forgot a step, please add it in for me, folks.
